This text provides a background story for and a thorough analysis of each the 227 monastic rules that the Buddha prescribed for Buddhist monks.  While this text is of primary interest to practicing monastics who wish to follow the Buddha’s instructions, it may also be of interest to lay practitioners, as it clarifies the Buddha’s perspective on a wide variety of moral and ethical questions which are not directly addressed in the Suttas.  It also contains a wide variety of stories and anecdotes not found elsewhere in the Canon.
